The Anitafrika Method is a decolonial Black Queer Feminist framework, performance praxis and pedagogy of transformation, Created by d'bi.young anitafrika and inspired by the foundational dub poetry theory of their mother, dub poet Anita Stewart. the method seeks to support the Holistic growth and development of People from various backgrounds through reflexive inquiry.

A Black Queer Feminist Framework

As a Black queer feminist framework, the Anitafrika method is an intersectional approach to understanding and addressing the interconnected systems of oppression that impact Black, Indigenous and other Global Majority people including queer and gender-nonconforming people. This framework is informed by Black feminist thought, decoloniality and queer theory and acknowledges the unique experiences, challenges, and strengths of folx who navigate multiple, overlapping identities. It centres our voices, experiences, and perspectives in order to challenge dominant narratives, dismantle oppressive systems, and promote social justice and equity.

A Performance Praxis

As a performance praxis, the Anitafrika Method integrates theory, practice, and reflection to promote personal growth, social change, and transformative artistic experiences. By centring Black, Indigenous, and global majority experiences and perspectives, this approach uses performance as a tool to explore, challenge, and dismantle oppressive systems such as racism, sexism, ableism and heteronormativity. It emphasizes the power of performance in fostering connection, understanding, and healing among people and communities while actively addressing power dynamics and systemic oppression. The Anitafrika Method acknowledges the intersectionality of various forms of oppression faced by Black, Indigenous, and other global majority peoples, as well as queer, gender-non-conforming, and differently-abled folx. This approach seeks to engage performers and audience members in inclusive, equitable, and empowering conversations and actions, using performance as a platform to explore, challenge, and dismantle oppressive systems.

A Pedagogy of Transformation

As a Pedagogy of transformation, the Anitafrika Method is an educational approach that focuses on fostering personal growth, critical consciousness, and social change through transformative learning experiences. This pedagogical approach aims to empower practitioners to question and challenge dominant narratives, systems of power, and social norms, and to actively engage in the process of individual and collective transformation. Key aspects of the method as a pedagogy of transformation include: critical thinking, reflexivity, dialogue and collaboration, experiential learning, intersectionality and inclusivity, social justice and equity, empowerment and fostering a holistic approach.
